One of the toughest and most durable finishes that you can apply to a garage floor today is an epoxy coating. Since the garage is fast becoming more than just a place where you park the car, the benefits of epoxy garage floors have quickly made it one of the top choices for garage flooring today.

Used for both residential and commercial applications, epoxy will give your garage or shop floor that showroom shine that says “look at me”! Depending on which application you choose, you can select from a variety of solid colors and hues, to custom colors and blends of color flakes that match your style or even your favorite sports team.

So let’s examine briefly what an epoxy coating really is, what the benefits are for you, learn how it’s applied, and some of the costs involved.

    What is Garage Floor Epoxy?

An epoxy garage floors coating is not paint, epoxy is a 2 part component when mixed together it starts a chemical reaction that hardens.  Paint for garage floors is a latex acrylic product. Some paints will have a small percentage of epoxy added to the mix to make it more durable than standard paint, but it is still paint. These are known as epoxy paints or 1-part epoxy paint.

Benefits of an Epoxy Garage Floor:

So what makes an epoxy coating one of the best finishes for your garage floor? Besides looking nice, the hardened and thick application that you get from epoxy creates a coating that is very durable and resilient to impacts, chipping, chemicals, stains, and surface abrasion. You don’t have to panic about damaging the floor if you drop a wrench or a bicycle falls over.

The thicker coating also does a great job of covering over minor imperfections such as small spider cracks and flaws in the concrete. Because epoxy is a topical sealer, it is also anti-dusting. Much of the dust in a garage is created from the powder that a cement floor can shed. Regular traffic on bare concrete can kick up this dusty powder that has a tendency of collecting on cars, tool benches, and storage items, as well as being tracked into the house.

How is Garage Floor Epoxy Applied?

Epoxy garage floors require good floor preparation, which is critical for a successful coating. This usually involves some form of either floor grinding or shot blasting of the floor to profile the concrete for the epoxy. It’s very critical that it is done right, or the epoxy coating will not adhere properly. Patching or repairing any cracks or other damage to the concrete before the epoxy is applied is required as well.

    Josh McCaslin

Born and raised in Kansas City, I am family-oriented and well rooted in the Midwest. When not busy creating beautiful floors, I enjoy spending time with my daughter Olivia, age 6. We have two dogs, Gizmo and Gracie. We enjoy traveling, watching movies and all things little girls love to do!

I began in this industry at the age of 16 and have built my business from the ground up. I am extremely passionate about my work and enjoy creating beautiful projects for my customers.

Why should I choose an epoxy floor?

There are an immense number of benefits to choosing epoxy flooring. The first and foremost one is epoxy is cost effective.  It is extremely durable and also stain resistant.  The surface makes for an easy clean up as well.  Also, there are limitless colors to choose from, giving you a one of a kind floor.

How long is the process of installing a new epoxy floor?

Typically our installation takes no longer than two days to complete, most garages fall into this time frame. More elaborate decorative floors usually take 3-4 days.  The more preparation needed, the more time it takes to complete.

How do I clean my new epoxy floor?

You can give your new floors a light cleaning with a broom, or dust mop. For spills, simply wipe them up with a paper towel or wash cloth. For a deep clean, you will want to mop your floors with a simple mix of ammonia and water. It’s best to avoid any soap mixtures as they can leave a film which can cause your floors to become slippery.  Metallic floor coatings show a bit more wear and tear and need more frequent cleaning.

Will my new epoxy floor be slippery?

Depending on your specific flooring choice, your floor may have a slightly textured surface and feel, or a glass-like smooth surface. In most cases, your floor will be no more slippery than regular concrete when it’s wet. There are slip resistant additives that can be added to the top coat that will help with this issue.

There are some small cracks and other defects in my concrete. Will this affect the epoxy coating?

The most important part of installation process is the preparation of the existing floor. Defects, fissures and dust may compromise the integrity of your new epoxy floor. All efforts are taken to eliminate those defects during the process. By using high quality diamond grinding equipment combined with diligent efforts from our team, we are able to keep the dust to a minimum and prepare the floor correctly.
